nw App appearing as black screen. #6152

NWJS Version :0.22.0
Operating System :Windows 10(Only seen on HP DC8200 and DC8300)

Expected behavior

NW app should launch successfully.

Actual behavior

NW app appears as a black screen .Sometimes during startup,sometimes it goes to that state after running normally for some time.

How to reproduce

Completely random but happening in Windows 10(Only seen on HP DC8200 and DC8300).

We enabled chromium debug logs and following error messages were there-

Looks like the user data directory was locked -- do you have another instance running?

No I guess. However,this happens for some specific windows users. Even if that's what is causing this ,how can this happen in between,after the app has successfully launched.

Anything else seems suspicious to you here?I feel it might very specific to the machine specifications.

Hi,actually we are also not able to reproduce this in house.We are seeing this with only one of our customers which has nw version 0.22.0. It has also been recently reported that the black screen sort of auto heals after some time.

@dsomesh I found the issue on my end - it was a missing .node binary. Sorry for the false alarm.

@quantumproducer did it ever recover in your case?For us this issue is random and it does recover if its left like that.

@dsomesh users have reported the issue fixed. You can view the code and libraries used at http://QuantumPilot.me - free download of RC7.

Before I fixed, it was never recovering because it was crashing on loading the node module.

hi, i have a similar situation on my computer.

Repeat steps:
1、new process by nw.exe
2、 set the parent window of the nw.exe wndow
3、parent window is explorer.exe
4、Narrow the explorer.exe winodw
5、wait a few minutes
6、open the explorer.exe

first,find the explorer.exe window handle (::FindWindow());
then find the nw.exe window handle (::FindWindow());
set the parent window (::SetParent())

Lenovo p51 with Windows 10 Pro and NVIDIA Quadro M1200.

I get the problem while my laptop is in the docking station connected to two additional monitors(3 in total).

Doesnt matter which nw.js i use but i tried the latest 0.30 and 0.23 and neither did work. As soon as i dock off the laptop it works without any problem.

Also with nwjs 0.31.0.

@daemon-7 this usage is not supported by Chromium gfx stack.

Is there any difference between NW and Chrome if navigates to 'chrome://gpu' ? You can launch NW with nw --url='chrome://gpu'

  • nw shows a blank white page
  • chromium shows all the Details
  • Using --disable-gpu with nw works as well

Also checked:

Chrome: Version 67.0.3396.62 (Official Build) (64-Bit) works fine
Chromium: Version 69.0.3451.0 (Developer-Build) (64-Bit) works fine

Im testing with 30.5

Chrome displays chrome://gpu fine
Chromium displays chrome://gpu fine

NW:

  • 'chrome://gpu' = Black page with one white stripe
  • 'chrome://gpu' and --disable-gpu shows "this page cant be reached" aka. normal chrome website message
  • no 'chrome://gpu' and --disable-gpu it shows NW like it should.

Thanks. I'll fix the blank page of chrome://gpu first and then we can examine the difference. Before that you could also try nw 0.30.5 and post the data here (also with the data from Chrome).

As planned in #6152 (comment), I just pushed a fix for chrome://gpu and it will be available in the next nightly build. After that we could get the information to compare.

I was encountering this issue with NVidia Quadro driver 419.67. All NW.js windows were solid black with a slight flicker. Running NW.js with --disable-gpu worked around the issue. Once I upgraded to 430.39, the issue went away even when GPU acceleration was being used. As my "problem" driver came out after @bjoernneumann's issue was resolved (and he was using 390.77), this seems to be a reoccurring problem that might need further investigation.
