It took a while to cut through the frame, but it was definitely worth the effort to how this Kirk had been put together. There is no internal spider, which some thought failed and led to the dreaded frame flex and it is surprisingly clean and simple internally. There are 2 separately glued insert panels and as you will see, numerous air pockets. The combination of the air pockets, e-stay design and glued inserts led to the frame flex problems on the MTB version. |

Courtesy of a previous employer, I've also obtained some x-ray pics of my broken frame and here are the low resolution previews of all of them. If you look closely at the bottom bracket area you can make out darker blemishes which are air pockets, ie weak spots. There are other weak spots in more critical areas too and from looking at these images, it doesn't look like it'll be possible to fix the frame flex problem. |
