January 2015 - a winter update

Tales from the off-season:

Tuesday 20th January saw what should be the first of many roller racing evenings at the Hare & Hounds on the Lea Bridge Road. The field was a little smaller than anticipated, but should grow and grow as word gets around. Alex, Barnaby, Lloyd and me represented Lea Valley and we had Ryan from Crest and Tony from Hackney taking part too. A diverse field – some in lycra with their race faces on and some in jeans and swigging from pints between races. Six proved a difficult number to sort out a format for: we settled on a first round against the clock, followed by an elimination round where 1st fastest raced 6th fastest, 2nd againts 5th, and 3rd against 4th. After this we got down to the semis, where a furious contest saw the fastest times of the night with Lloyd and Ryan seemingly matching each other with 26.7 seconds for the 500 virtual metres – the judges’ verdict was that Ryan had edged it by a hundredth of a second. Meanwhile Alex overcame Tony in the other semi. The final was another closely fought affair, with Alex pulling clear in the final stages and relaxing just before crossing the ‘line’:

We’ve picked up a large gang of new potential racers over the last eighteen months or so and many have been keen to dip their toes in the water as soon as possible. The winter series at Hog Hill has provided the opportunity and LVCC riders have been in action these last three freezing January weekends. David Veitch, fresh from his triumph at the club hill climb in November and the club circuit race at the Velopark in December, has hit the ground running and picked up two consecutive fourth places finishes – third cat already and the snow (well, sleet) is still coming down. Meanwhile Barnaby has put the frustration of his autumn Cyclopark debut behind him and got himself firmly in the bunch – something which eluded a few of us last season at Hog Hill! Some quotes: David “Relatively easy pace. Solo break about ¾ through which wasn’t chased down won. Spent too long on the front, but no-one was pushing the pace. So cold by the end - rain, sleet, snow, wind and 3˚C temp. Real struggle to change gear or use the brakes. Tinfoiled in the cafe for 30 minutes before could consider going home. Muscles hurt not from cycling, but shivering.” and Barnaby “Racing bikes in the snow! Never been so cold in the whole of my life. It was rain then sleet then snow couldn’t even change gear at the end hands were frozen solid could just about brake.” Don’t try this at home, kids.

Meanwhile, some of those not yet racing have been seriously putting in the winter miles. Last Sunday, in less than ideal temperatures, Pedro, Alex, Nestor, Monika, and Carsten rode up to Saffron Walden and then tried to recreate last summer’s Tour de France stage 3 from there onwards. All of them did over 100 miles, with Alex hitting 117 miles by the time he made it back to Barking. Barking mad, if you ask me.

A special mention to Harry, who has recently pushed the barriers of endurance riding. On a particularly cold Sunday morning a few weeks ago we decided against braving the ice of the Essex lanes and headed into town to do laps of Regents Park instead. We’d made it just past the Holloway Road when one of our number punctured. The resulting numb-fingered repair took a while and so Harry had to turn back when the ride resumed, never even getting to set his eyes on Camden Town and all that lies beyond. An epic adventure
