Race Report - Cyclopark Sat 9th May 2015

Saturday saw some of the race squad back in action, this time back at Cyclopark in Kent. Soren was supposed to be making his debut, but messaged us in the morning to say that he wouldn’t be able to make it as he had had to blow his nose. Something lost in translation? This didn’t seem the best excuse in the world, but we managed to talk him round and convince him to ride. He set off by train, Alex and Tim rode down there (assisted by a considerable tailwind) and I loaded my bike onto the back of the car. There were road closures in Walthamstow because of a planned demonstration so I needed to do a three-point turn to head off towards the North Circular, but as soon as I reversed my car in preparation for this manoeuvre there was a worrying crunching sound behind me. From nowhere, a previously invisible signpost had leapt out and tried to assault the back of my car. Fortunately my bike (worth significantly more than the aged car) had blocked its path. I had a quick check and couldn’t see any obvious damage, so set off round the M25.

Soren was already waiting when I arrived to sign on and get my number. While I got changed Tim and Alex also appeared. I said ‘hello’ and told them about how I had narrowly avoided damaging my bike. They pointed at the flaking paintwork on the downtube near the bottle cage. My face dropped as I peeled more and more of it away and saw the cracked carbon. This didn’t look good. I got a second opinion from the bike shop there and they warned me that the whole thing might suddenly fail and I shouldn’t ride it. Gah! A wasted drive, a weekend (and probably more) without cycling, a potentially big hole in my wallet – the silver lining was that I got the chance to cheer the others on and take loads of photos for the blog (not that much of a silver lining).

Not such a big field this time – I would say about 35 to 40 riders. Half a dozen or more went off the back early on and then Alex hit the front and led a breakaway. Here’s Alex’s story:

Tim and I ride the 22+ miles to the circuit to meet Soren who we have persuaded to ride despite having the sniffles, and Jamie who is driving through an EDL march.

We arrive at the circuit in plenty of time. Warmed up, we have a chat, inspect Jamie’s bike (see Jamie’s part of the report) and tell him he will be fine….

We get 2 warmup laps and get to the start line near the front. The flag drops and we are off. From the start it was obvious that there were a few inexperienced riders. The wind was making things interesting too but some riders had no idea how to ride safely. I had already picked a few to avoid and as Tim comes past me he warns me about a couple of guys.

The wind was a cross/head wind down the circuit which meant we would struggle into the wind and have to brake going downhill. This made me a bit nervous so I moved up.

I was in the main group for about 17 minutes. At this point a rider who had tried 3 times already to break away decided to go again. I was on the right hand side of a slowing bunch. 2 guys in front of me chase and so do I. Staying in their wheels we soon join the first rider. I glance back and see the peloton about 30yds back. Not great but we all give it a go in the front and after nearly giving up ourselves the chasing peloton gave up first. 5 of us toil away in the wind. Not a word spoken.*

I must admit I did too much work too early in the break. So I needed to recover, so took shorter turns or started missing turns. But I wasn’t alone. 2 others were also tired while the other 2 took it in turns to pull us along. When recovered we chain ganged our way around. The peloton was ever further back. A quick shout to Jamie and next lap he says we have about 30 seconds on the bunch. I relax. No bringing us back, I’m thinking.

With 2 to go we drop a rider. Then we start playing cat and mouse. With time to play with, we try to drop each other. I end up having to chase down 2 attacks before eventually just being ridden off the remaining 3 riders wheels with less than half a lap to go. I’m blowing… But I chase. The wind destroys me so I end up sprinting for no reason to 4th place. Safely ahead of the bunch. I’m gutted I couldn’t stay with the other guys but at the same time I’m overjoyed that I have enough points to join David, Pedro and Carsten in 3rd cat.

Time to recover… No, a 22 mile ride home in to a headwind topped off with a puncture 1 mile from home. Oh well, great day for it though.

* actually, I heard one guy shouting “everyone, 10 seconds each on the front, keep it going” as they came past me, but maybe Alex chose not to hear this ;-)

Meanwhile, Tim and Soren stayed comfortably in the main bunch for the duration and joined the sprint for sixth place (there were a couple of riders in no-man’s land after Alex). Soren claimed 9th to get a point on his licence at the first attempt, with Tim close behind in 13th.
