The Final Instalment of The Hog Without The Hill
Five of us were in action at Hog Hill on Saturday and we’ll look at the races in reverse chronological order because, frankly, the 3rd cat race was rather more interesting than the 4th cat one. Carsten (between night shifts), David and Alex took part in this one and actually managed to work as a team – finally it’s coming together.
Carsten attacked off the front and took two or three riders with him while David came to the front of the bunch and tried to slow things down, but after a few laps the break was brought back into the fold. Alex was yoyoing around the bunch sporting his trademark tongue-hanging-out look – it’s still not clear if this is a sign that he’s suffering or just his race face. David was looking relaxed, to the extent that he was able to lead the bunch round the top bend while giving a double thumbs up. As they took the bell all three were still in the bunch with Carsten and David towards the front and Alex towards the back. From our position just past the finish line we saw Carsten sprint hard to gain another third place – chapeau! Alex had also made considerable ground on the final lap and came home in 13th place. At first we were mystified to see David roll home after this, but it soon became clear – David had given Carsten a sprint lead out going into the final corner: teamwork in action and generating results. Hopefully the favour can be returned in the future.

Earlier on, I had raced with James in the 4th cat race. While it’s fair to see we didn’t trouble the business end of the bunch at any stage, it was pleasing enough for both of us that we stuck with them for the whole race. Alex had arrived early and was cheering us on and taking photos, so I decided to break away from my usual gurning face of pain and instead give a smile, a wave and a blown kiss in order to give some variety to the photos:

(James was wearing blue, black and white instead of club kit)

We both made several attempts to move up in the group, but it proved very tricky to make much progress and even trickier to hold your position once you’d gained some ground. That’s the next task.
For stats fans, the average speed of the 3rd cat race was 25.5mph and for the 4th cat race was 24.6mph – see Carsten’s strava here https://www.strava.com/activities/324598384 and mine here https://www.strava.com/activities/324670039

The Curse of Lea Valley CC
2015 is proving to be a never-ending series of crashes for our members. As reported earlier, the first few months saw bike-wrecking crashes for Soren and Nestor and rib-wrecking crashes for me and Alex (who, when he’s not fighting crime or being interviewed on TV, is on a one-man mission to break the record for crashes per year). Since then (and this is by no means an exhuastive list) Emma and Adam have broken arms/collar bones, Pedro has come to grief in the sprint finish of a road race, Lewis came a cropper on a club run and on Tuesday evening David crashed in the warm up after hitting a pedal on the ground on the hairpin bend. The ripped skinsuit and considerable road rash looked bad enough, but minutes later David had a bizarre allergic reaction and had to go to hospital. Meanwhile, Barnaby wrecked his knee cycling up Italian mountains and now has to be wheeled around in a bathchair. Speedy recovery to everyone and fingers crossed there won’t be much more of this to come.

The Tuesday Tens
Finally an end to the freak run of gales / rain / unseasonably cold weather – this latest Tuesday saw a record-breaking night at the Velopark, both in terms of popularity and times (and, now I think about it, in the number of flies). The warm, dry conditions and relatively gentle breeze saw people out in their droves. I arrived at 6.45pm and was staggered to see that 90 people had already signed up – given that we have to be off the circuit by 9pm there was scarcely even room to squeeze me in.
Ex-Hackney CC rider, young pro Tao Geoghegan Hart, took part for the first time and smashed the course record. Time haven’t been officially released yet, but it’s safe to say he was the first rider to smash the 21-minute barrier. PBs were being set all over the place. Of the Lea Valley riders, Alex deserves particular mention for going well under 24 minutes (and comfortably beating his rival Tim by about a minute), while his crime-busting partner John deserves mention for the top he was wearing.

Other Stuff
Huge swathes of Essex seem to have been covered in loose chippings over the last fortnight, making it very difficult to know in advance where it is safe/desirable to ride. If anyone has any info based on a ride they do, send us an update to our Facebook page so we all know which places to avoid.
The (unofficial) club Strava championships (which basically involve setting the fastest times up the various steep climbs in the south-west corner of Essex) have really been hotting up recently. Tim had taken the lead in the competition, but I did a 2:38 up Mott Street on Tuesday morning to regain the lead. The same day James broke my Avey Lane record by one second to leave it unbelievably tight at the top: at the moment just two seconds separate me, James and Tim in the first three spaces.

And finally, somebody kindly alerted us (via Facebook) to a set of photos on Flickr featuring the Morris family riders of yesteryear. Don says that Dick Morris was the man who first introduced John Summerhayes (club president) to LVCC and his brother Dave ‘Taff’ Morris was the club’s newsletter editor for many years. Take a look at the album:
