During my regular check for 5ghz update from IOT in general and espressif in particular, I found that realtek has now released a module with dual-band wifi + BLE (actually since early 2020) for few $.

Didn't dig more how it compares to esp32 in details, but good to see alternatives are coming with 5Ghz.

I have actually playing with the Realtek RTL8722dn (BW-16) module for some time because the 2.4 GHz airwaves are so crowded and devices tend to disconnect when the microwave oven runs. I was also able to get the module working with the Arduino IDE. I will be posting my experience on Github in the next week. Of course the Realtek module does not have near the company and community support of the Espressif products.

Still on the roadmap, but I'm afraid that still is all I can officially say about this.

I understand that is not a priority for Espressif, but the post was opened in June 2018, and the number of visits (54900) show that there is a real interest on this topic, your response is still the same, we cannot have visibility on this...

Actually we have developed a Smart Assembly Tool distributed in a lots of Smart Factories, we loved (and our customers also) work with ESP32 but without a clear response we will unfortunately switch to an other manufacturer proposing 5GHz wifi (for example Realtek RTL872xCS product line)
